Why does my baby wake every 2 hours?

As a baby and toddler sleep consultant, I’ve supported many families wondering the same thing. When you're exhausted, it's easy to wonder if you're doing something wrong or if your baby should be sleeping for longer by now.

The good news is that frequent night waking is often a completely normal part of infant sleep.

Why do babies wake so often?

Just like adults, babies move through different stages of sleep throughout the night. At the end of each sleep cycle, they briefly wake before settling into the next one.

As adults, we usually don't even remember these little awakenings because we naturally drift back to sleep. Babies are still learning this skill, so it's very common for them to need a little reassurance to settle again.

Some babies do this independently, while others need a cuddle, a feed or simply the comfort of knowing you're nearby.

Does breastfeeding mean my baby wakes more?

Breastfeeding itself isn't a problem, and feeding your baby to sleep isn't a "bad habit."

Breastfed babies often wake more frequently in the early months because breast milk is digested more quickly than formula. Many babies also feed for comfort as well as hunger, especially during periods of rapid development, teething or illness.

Waking to feed is biologically normal and doesn't mean you've done anything wrong.

Every baby is different

It's so easy to compare your baby's sleep to what you see online or hear from friends. But the truth is, babies aren't all the same.

Some naturally sleep for longer stretches from an early age, while others need more reassurance during the night. Factors like temperament, development, illness, teething and milestones can all affect sleep too.

Progress isn't linear either, so just when you think you've cracked it, your little one might suddenly start waking more again. That's completely normal too.

When is it OK to want more sleep?

While night waking is normal, that doesn't mean you simply have to struggle on without support.

If you're feeling exhausted, there are gentle, responsive ways to encourage longer stretches of sleep while continuing to meet your baby's needs. Small changes to bedtime routines, sleep environment and settling approaches can often make a real difference over time, without leaving your little one to cry alone.

Every family is different, which is why there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to sleep.
